Planting on Behalf: KMC Supports 10,000 Native Trees for the Sierra Madre Through FEED’s Ridge to Reef Program

On June 25, 2025, employees of KMC Solutions joined hands with FEED, Inc. for a meaningful day of environmental action in the foothills of the Sierra Madre. In partnership with the forest guards and staff of the UPLB Laguna-Quezon Land Grant, KMC Solutions supported a large-scale reforestation effort under FEED’s Ridge to Reef Program—an integrated initiative that links upland forest restoration with coastal ecosystem protection.

Despite the Sierra Madre’s unpredictable microclimate—marked by frequent rains and strong winds shaped by its steep terrain—the activity moved forward with determination. A total of 10,000 native Philippine trees were planted during the initiative. Of these, 2,000 seedlings were planted directly by KMC employees, while 8,000 were planted on the company’s behalf by local forest guardians. The species included 6,640 Maraluhat, 750 Kupang, 600 Igang, 600 Kalumpit, 300 Balitbitan, 300 Tagpo, 300 Narra, 100 Talang, 400 Marang, and 10 Gakakan.

Each species was carefully chosen for its ecological value. Native trees are essential to preserving biodiversity, stabilizing soil, and sustaining healthy ecosystems. Unlike introduced species, they are naturally adapted to local conditions, support endemic wildlife, and significantly contribute to carbon sequestration—strengthening climate resilience at both the local and global levels.

This activity reflects the long-standing partnership between KMC Solutions and FEED, built on years of shared commitment to restoring and safeguarding the Philippines’ natural landscapes. Under the guidance of Forester Rey Lorida, with the support of Ms. Rose Bocado, proper planting techniques were ensured while also building the capacity of local communities to continue conservation work.

The Ridge to Reef Program recognizes the ecological connection between upland forests and coastal systems. By restoring forest cover in mountainous areas, the initiative reduces soil erosion, improves water retention, and lowers flood risks in downstream communities. These upland efforts complement coastal restoration activities—such as mangrove and coral rehabilitation—helping protect marine biodiversity and shield coastal areas from storm surges. Together, these actions strengthen ecosystem resilience from mountain ridges to coral reefs.

Beyond environmental restoration, the program emphasizes community participation and sustainable livelihoods. Local residents are actively engaged in reforestation efforts and receive hands-on training in conservation practices, creating meaningful and environmentally aligned sources of income. By equipping communities with knowledge and tools, the initiative fosters long-term stewardship and a culture of shared responsibility.

This reforestation effort highlights the power of collective action—bringing together corporate partners like KMC Solutions, grassroots community members, and conservation professionals in a unified mission. Through collaboration, resources and expertise are amplified, creating a lasting support system that sustains and scales environmental impact.

KMC Solutions’ continued involvement not only expands the reach of FEED’s conservation initiatives but also exemplifies corporate environmental responsibility. Their support ensures that efforts extend beyond planting—toward nurturing and protecting ecosystems as they grow and thrive.

We extend our sincere gratitude to KMC Solutions for its steadfast commitment to nature conservation. We also thank the forest guards, local community members, Forester Rey Lorida, and Ms. Rose Bocado, whose dedication and expertise made this initiative possible. Together, they remind us that protecting our natural heritage is a shared responsibility—one rooted in partnership, hope, and a vision for a greener, more resilient future.
