22 July 2016, Siniloan, Laguna. What began as an inquisitive phone call and follow-up email from the HR & Administration Manager of Ben Edictio Corporation, blossomed into a half-day Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Patron’s Program with all 27 staff planting indigenous Philippine tree species in Siniloan, Laguna on Saturday, 22 July 2016.
Aptly, Ben Edictio hails from the latin word “benediction” which means “blessings”.
“One of the ways to understand why living naturally* is the only way of the future, and how our present way of life is unsustainable, is to look at this:
- The Earth is 4.6 billion years old.
- If you scale this to 46 years then the human race has been here for just 4 hours.
- The Industrial Revolution began just 1 minute ago and…
- in that time, 50% of the Earth’s forests have been destroyed.”
Ben Edictio Climate Change Action Context: Signing of Paris Agreement under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
The drafting of the UNFCCC completed by December 2015, and its signing on 22 April 2016 was pre-requisited to a ratification/accession by 55 UNFCCC Parties, accounting for 55% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
From the arrival at the tree-planting site, the company was introduced to the Sierra Madre mountain range forestry characteristics and FEED’s Partner in site development and reforestation, the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), led by Foresters Benjamin D. Arizala and Rey Lorida.
Prior to the planting and to set the context of climate change action, the inspirational message was delivered by Ben Edictio Corp. Director, Mr. Dominicus Cheung, with a welcome by FEED Chairman Jacob Bakker and the role of FEED and their alignment with the Philippines’ Sustainable Development Goals. Guided by professional foresters, the CSR team building event included a “Nature Walk & Talk” to the tree planting site prior to all participants planting native Philippine hardwood trees, including malabunga, malabatino and narra.
