Ivoclar Reinforces Dedication to Mother Nature with Sixth Tree Planting Initiative to Fight Climate Change

On the rainy morning of February 1, 2024, despite the downpour, participants gathered with excitement and enthusiasm for Ivoclar’s sixth tree planting event, held in Siniloan, Laguna. The wet and windy weather was typical of the microclimate found in the Sierra Madre Mountains, where frequent rainfall and strong winds are common due to the region’s elevation and rugged landscape. Microclimates in mountainous areas often feature dramatic shifts in weather over short distances, influenced by factors like terrain and altitude. In the Sierra Madre, this variability supports a rich biodiversity and plays a key role in sustaining the region’s ecosystems.

During the event, over 550 native Philippine trees were successfully planted by the dedicated Ivoclar participants. Among the trees planted were 150 Malaruhat, 100 Palong Maria, 100 Kalumpit, 100 Lipote, and 100 Marang. Native trees like these play an essential role in maintaining the balance of the Philippine ecosystem. Endemic species are well adapted to local conditions, which ensures they thrive without the need for excessive intervention, unlike foreign species that can disrupt local ecosystems. Planting these trees helps restore deforested areas, prevent soil erosion, and promote biodiversity, offering shelter and food to native wildlife while strengthening the resilience of forests in the face of climate change.

Native Philippine trees are vital to the country’s ecosystem because they are uniquely adapted to the local environment, making them more resistant to pests and diseases that foreign species often bring. Their deep roots help stabilize the soil, reducing the likelihood of landslides, especially in upland areas prone to erosion. In addition, native trees support indigenous wildlife by providing habitats and food, sustaining the complex web of life that has evolved in the region. By focusing on endemic species, we help ensure the survival of local biodiversity, protect water sources, and create sustainable forests that future generations can rely on.

Before setting off on the day’s activities, Ms. Rose Bocado led the group in a morning exercise to prepare everyone physically and mentally. Following this, participants were introduced to the Ridge to Reef Program by FEED, Inc., a comprehensive environmental initiative aimed at reforesting upland areas with Philippine native trees. This program focuses on forest landscape restoration to combat erosion, protect watersheds, and mitigate the impacts of flooding on coastal and lowland areas. The Ridge to Reef approach highlights the interconnectedness of ecosystems, from mountainous ridges down to the coastal reefs, emphasizing the importance of restoring both forests and marine environments for the benefit of communities living in these areas.

The Ridge to Reef Program does more than just plant trees. It integrates mangrove planting and coral restoration efforts, crucial to protecting coastal areas from storm surges and supporting marine life. By involving local communities, the program provides alternative livelihoods, such as eco-tourism and agroforestry, allowing locals to become stewards of the environment while benefiting economically. Over time, the initiative aims to create self-sustaining communities capable of managing environmental restoration efforts independently, ensuring that the legacy of environmental conservation continues for future generations.

The Sierra Madre Mountains play a crucial role in protecting the Philippines from the devastating impact of typhoons. Acting as a natural barrier, these mountains weaken incoming storms, reducing the intensity of winds and rainfall before they reach heavily populated lowland areas. In the face of increasing climate change, the importance of the Sierra Madre cannot be overstated. As typhoons grow stronger and more frequent due to rising global temperatures, preserving the Sierra Madre’s forests is essential to ensuring the region’s resilience to climate-related disasters. Reforestation efforts, like the one led by Ivoclar, help maintain this natural defense while also addressing broader climate change challenges.

Illegal logging has plagued the Philippines for decades, causing deforestation and degradation of vital forests like the Sierra Madre. The unsustainable extraction of timber not only destroys wildlife habitats but also increases the risk of landslides and flooding, endangering nearby communities. Restarting forest restoration efforts, such as reforestation with native species, is a critical step in reversing the damage caused by illegal logging. It requires both stringent enforcement of environmental laws and community-driven initiatives, where locals are educated and empowered to protect their forests. Combining government action with grassroots conservation efforts will be key to ensuring the future health of the country’s forests.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the passionate eco-warriors from Ivoclar who braved the rain to make this tree-planting event a success. Your determination and commitment to protecting our planet inspire us all. Special thanks go to the local community, particularly the women who prepared a delicious lunch that nourished everyone after the hard work. We are also deeply grateful to the Forest Guardians, Forester Rey Lorida, and Ms. Rose Bocado for their guidance and assistance in making this event possible. The world needs more individuals like you, dedicated to nurturing and preserving our natural environment for future generations.

How Trees Secretly Talk to Each Other (BBC News)

Trees talk and share resources right under our feet, using a fungal network nicknamed the Wood Wide Web. Some plants use the system to support their offspring, while others hijack it to sabotage their rivals.
