Advantage Austria Presents Energy Globe Award to One Child, One Tree

5 October 2020, Hagonoy Municipal Hall, Bulacan. On Child, One Tree was awarded the certificate as the National winner for the Philippines by Energy Globe Award 2020, on 5th October 2020 at Hagonoy Municipal Hall.  The Energy Globe Award was founded in 1999 by Austrian energy pioneer Wolfgang Nuemann and is one of the most prestigious environmental awards. It recognizes sustainable environment projects from all over the world.

The award was given by Ms. Christina Stieber, Commercial Counsellor for Advantage Austria of the Austrian Embassy. She was accompanied by Ms. Tess Francisco and Ms. Joanne Tolentino.  It was received by Natalia Sali’s, children – Ayesa Agniezka, Klaude Niklaus, Mikhail Harbey, and Monica Elena. Also present were the town’s mayor, Honorable Raulito Manlapaz, Sr., local government staff, and some partners including Mr. Jose Aguilar, coordinator of Leading Environment Action for the Future (LEAF) and Mr. Vic Cruz of the Hagonoy Fish Farmers Cooperative.

After the awarding, Mayor Manlapaz, Sr. treated the guests with sumptuous breakfast. They then visited the mangrove sanctuary via a 30-minute boat ride from the town hall to Tibaguin.

Natalia Sali started the advocacy in January 2017, with its first project in partnership with 25 primary schools. Twenty volunteers facilitated training on trees and environment protection to 4,000 students. The students then planted 800 trees.

OCOT is aimed at raising the awareness of children to become partners in protecting the environment. Just over three years, One Child, One Tree has implemented numerous tree planting activities in schools, mountains, and coastal areas; built bio-intensive gardens in selected public schools; conducted clean up drives in Hagonoy Mangrove Sanctuary; and held research training and survey on mangrove conservation and solid waste management. Its volunteer base has grown from 20 to now almost 100, mostly young people whose passion for the environment has been awaken through OCOT’s advocacy. Sali Family is sorely grateful to Fostering Education & Environment for Development (FEED).

OCOT believes that simple actions of ordinary people will bring about change and that educating the public on environment protection will enable them to do their own part. The award is being shared with volunteers, sponsors and donors, partners from the government and non-government organizations, and residents of Hagonoy, Bulacan.
