Meralco Foundation’s Unceasing Commitment Over the Years, Planting Additional Trees to Protect Sierra Madre

On the morning of June 20, 2024, under clear skies and unusually sunny conditions, the Meralco Foundation led a reforestation initiative in the Sierra Madre mountain ranges. Typically, the area experiences unpredictable microclimates, characterized by frequent rain and strong winds due to its elevation and dense forests. However, this day’s favorable weather allowed the event to proceed smoothly. With the help of the forest guards and staff from UPLB Laguna-Quezon Land Grant, alongside the dedicated local community, hundreds of native Philippine trees were successfully planted. This significant effort contributes to the ongoing mission of restoring and protecting the vital ecosystems of Sierra Madre.

Planting native Philippine trees is essential for the health of our forests and the broader environment. Endemic species such as Narra, Molave, and Kamagong are uniquely adapted to the Philippines’ climate and ecosystems, providing habitats for indigenous wildlife. These trees also strengthen biodiversity, ensuring a more resilient environment against pests, diseases, and climate fluctuations. Unlike non-native species, endemic trees maintain the natural balance and enhance the regeneration of forests, as they’ve co-evolved with local flora and fauna. By planting native species, we preserve the ecological heritage of the country, contribute to the health of the soil, and support the natural water cycle that prevents erosion and promotes sustainable ecosystems.

FEED, Inc.’s Ridge to Reef Program, which this effort is a part of, addresses environmental issues holistically, starting from upland forests to coastal ecosystems. In upland areas, planting native trees prevents soil erosion, stabilizes slopes, and enhances water absorption, significantly reducing flood risks. Meanwhile, in coastal regions, mangroves and corals are planted to protect shorelines from storm surges and provide habitats for marine life. This interconnected approach ensures that the health of mountain forests impacts the safety and resilience of coastal communities, creating a sustainable system from the ridges to the reefs. Beyond environmental protection, the program empowers local communities by providing them with alternative livelihoods through involvement in the conservation efforts, ultimately turning them into self-sustaining stewards of the environment.

The Sierra Madre Mountains serve as a vital natural barrier, shielding the Philippines from the brunt of powerful typhoons. Without this mountain range, the damage caused by these storms would be exponentially greater, particularly in the northern and eastern regions of the country. As climate change intensifies weather patterns, it becomes even more critical to protect the Sierra Madre and reinforce its ecosystems through reforestation and conservation efforts. By mitigating the effects of storms and regulating the microclimate, these mountains are an indispensable ally in the fight against the climate crisis. Collective action is essential in tackling large-scale environmental challenges. When organizations like the Meralco Foundation, FEED, Inc., local communities, and forest guards come together, the impact is far greater than any individual effort. Working together enables the pooling of resources, expertise, and manpower, making it possible to cover larger areas, protect more ecosystems, and educate more people about the importance of environmental stewardship. Through collective action, communities can strengthen their bonds and create long-lasting environmental benefits for future generations.

We express our heartfelt appreciation to Meralco Foundation for their unwavering commitment to environmental conservation over the years. This latest tree planting effort is a testament to their enduring partnership in restoring the Philippines’ forests. We also extend our gratitude to the local community, particularly the forest guards, for their tireless dedication to planting and nurturing the seedlings on behalf of our partners. Special thanks go to Forester Rey Lorida and Ms. Rose Bocado for their invaluable guidance throughout the reforestation project. Their expertise and leadership have been instrumental in making this endeavor a success.
