Strengthening Sierra Madre: Meralco Foundation’s Commitment to Reforestation

The Sierra Madre mountain range stands as a natural shield, safeguarding the Philippines from the full impact of powerful typhoons. Without its dense forests and towering peaks, the devastation from storms would be significantly worse, particularly in the country’s northern and eastern regions. As climate change continues to drive extreme weather patterns, preserving and restoring the Sierra Madre’s ecosystems is more crucial than ever. Reforestation efforts play a key role in reinforcing the mountain’s ability to regulate the microclimate and mitigate the effects of typhoons.

On October 30, 2024, the Meralco Foundation led a reforestation initiative in the Sierra Madre mountain ranges under an uncharacteristically bright and cloudless sky. Typically, the area is known for its unpredictable microclimates, bringing frequent rainfall and gusty winds due to its high elevation and dense forest cover. However, the favorable weather conditions that day allowed the event to proceed seamlessly. With support from the dedicated forest guards and staff of the UPLB Laguna-Quezon Land Grant, as well as members of the local community, a hundred native Philippine trees were successfully planted. This initiative strengthens ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and protect one of the country’s most vital ecosystems.

A major component of this project is the planting of native Philippine tree species, which are essential to the long-term health and resilience of the country’s forests. Indigenous trees such as Balitbitan, Bani, Lipote, Katmon and Agusip are naturally suited to the local environment, fostering biodiversity and providing critical habitats for wildlife. These species play a vital role in stabilizing the ecosystem, preventing soil erosion, and supporting the natural water cycle. Unlike exotic species, native trees have co-evolved with the region’s flora and fauna, ensuring ecological harmony and enhancing forest regeneration. By prioritizing these species in reforestation efforts, we help preserve the nation’s rich ecological heritage.

This tree planting initiative is part of FEED, Inc.’s Ridge to Reef Program, a comprehensive environmental strategy that connects upland forests to coastal ecosystems. In mountainous regions, reforestation helps stabilize slopes, reduce erosion, and improve water retention, ultimately minimizing flood risks. Meanwhile, in coastal areas, mangrove reforestation and coral restoration projects protect shorelines from storm surges and provide essential breeding grounds for marine species. This holistic approach highlights the interconnectedness of ecosystems, demonstrating that the health of forests directly influences the well-being of coastal communities. Additionally, the program fosters local engagement by offering alternative livelihoods, empowering residents to become active stewards of their environment.

Environmental conservation is most effective when communities, organizations, and experts work together toward a common goal. Collaborative efforts between the Meralco Foundation, FEED, Inc., local volunteers, and forest guards have amplified the positive impact of this reforestation initiative. Pooling resources, expertise, and manpower enables larger areas to be rehabilitated, more ecosystems to be safeguarded, and greater awareness to be raised about the importance of environmental preservation. Through collective action, lasting environmental benefits can be achieved, ensuring a greener, more resilient future for generations to come.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Meralco Foundation for its steadfast dedication to reforestation and environmental sustainability. This recent initiative is a reflection of their enduring commitment to restoring Philippine forests. We also recognize the invaluable contributions of the local community, particularly the forest guards who continuously nurture the seedlings and safeguard the land. Special thanks go to Forester Rey Lorida and Ms. Rose Bocado for their expert guidance, which played a crucial role in the success of this project. Their leadership and knowledge continue to drive meaningful conservation efforts forward.

Through ongoing reforestation projects, the collective commitment of stakeholders ensures that the Sierra Madre remains a thriving and protective force for the Philippines. With continued collaboration and dedication, we can safeguard our forests, protect our communities, and strengthen our nation’s environmental resilience.

In 2015, the Philippine government submitted to the United Nations the country’s commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The country committed to reduce its carbon emissions by 70 percent by 2030. The carbon dioxide reductions will come from the sectors of energy, transport, waste, forestry and industry.

FEED runs a number of Students and Volunteers for the Environment (SAVE)Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) – such as mangrove planting for coastal protection or ridge reforestation plantings; One Child, One TreeBio-Intensive Gardens (BIG) for nutrition in public elementary schools and other spaces; Climate Change Survival 101 and other LIVING LEGACY programs – customised environmental engagement activities for individuals and organisations interested in contributing to climate change adaptation efforts and greening critical areas such as watersheds, ridges, and reefs that all require rehabilitation.
