27 December 2024, Siniloan, Laguna. On this early morning, seven dedicated eco-warriors from Henkel Global Business Solutions Philippines set foot in the Laguna Quezon Land Grant, nestled within the Sierra Madre mountain ranges. The day greeted them with unexpectedly calm weather—clear skies and a gentle breeze. The determination of the participants remained steadfast as they pressed on with their mission: to plant 50 native Philippine tree seedlings and contribute to the restoration of this vital ecosystem.
The tree planting effort focused on two endemic species—25 Balitbitan and 25 Tu-i. Native trees like these play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, as they are well-adapted to the local soil and climate. Unlike exotic species that can disrupt biodiversity, native trees promote soil stability, improve water retention, and provide a habitat for local wildlife. Reforestation with endemic trees ensures the land remains fertile, supports carbon sequestration, and preserves the intricate balance of flora and fauna in the Sierra Madre.
Before beginning their trek to the planting site, participants engaged in a morning discussion led by Forester Rey Lorida of the Laguna Quezon Land Grant. He emphasized the critical role of the Sierra Madre Mountains as the country’s natural barrier against strong typhoons, shielding urban and agricultural areas from devastating winds and floods. This natural defense is only effective when forests remain intact—a stark contrast to the ongoing threat of illegal logging.
Illegal logging remains a rampant issue, driven by demand for timber and agricultural expansion. The destruction of forests weakens soil integrity, leading to erosion, landslides, and increased flooding. It also disrupts biodiversity, threatening endemic plant and animal species that rely on forest cover for survival. Reforestation efforts, such as those undertaken by Henkel Global Business Solutions Philippines , are vital in counteracting the damage caused by decades of deforestation, gradually restoring ecological balance and protecting communities from environmental disasters.
This effort aligns with the Ridge to Reef program, an initiative designed to restore forest landscapes and mitigate the far-reaching effects of deforestation. By planting native Philippine trees, the program helps stabilize slopes, improve soil retention, and reduce flood risks in lowland and coastal areas. Beyond tree planting, it also integrates mangrove and coral restoration efforts, ensuring the protection of entire ecosystems—from the ridges of the mountains to the reefs of the sea.
Moreover, the Ridge to Reef program fosters community development by providing alternative livelihoods for local residents. These initiatives empower individuals to become facilitators of environmental activities, instilling a long-term culture of conservation and stewardship. By engaging both corporate volunteers and local communities, the program promotes shared responsibility in protecting natural resources.
Another key highlight of the event was the Tree Nurturing Program, which reinforces the role of the Sierra Madre Mountains in disaster risk reduction. As climate change intensifies extreme weather patterns, preserving and rehabilitating the Sierra Madre is essential. The mountains act as a first line of defense, absorbing the impact of typhoons and reducing wind speeds before they reach populated areas. Forest restoration efforts not only strengthen this protective shield but also contribute to carbon sequestration, mitigating climate change on a broader scale.
The success of this reforestation initiative would not have been possible without the enthusiastic participation of Henkel Global Business Solutions Philippines . Their commitment to environmental conservation was evident in their dedication and perseverance throughout the event. Special thanks go to the local community members who prepared a nourishing meal for the participants, as well as the Forest Guardians and facilitators—including Forester Rey Lorida and Ms. Rose Bocado—whose guidance ensured the program’s smooth execution. FEED, Inc. extends its deepest gratitude to all involved and looks forward to fostering more meaningful partnerships in the future.
Through collaborative efforts, we continue to plant the seeds of sustainability, nurture our forests, and safeguard the environment for generations to come.
