Laguna, Philippines — September 12, 2025. Under the warm glow of the early summer sun, the Laguna Quezon Land Grant came alive with the spirit of environmental stewardship as 30 volunteers from Herma Group joined FEED, Inc. for a day of tree planting in the Sierra Madre mountain ranges. The clear skies and gentle breeze painted a rare calm over the usually unpredictable microclimates of the Sierra Madre—an encouraging sign for a meaningful day of action.
Despite the challenging terrain and variable weather patterns typical of the mountains, the volunteers pressed on with determination and unity, successfully planting 200 Philippine native trees—including 20 Ipil, 30 Malaruhat, and 150 Kupang. These tree species, all native to the Philippines, play a vital role in restoring biodiversity and strengthening ecosystems naturally adapted to local conditions.
Planting native trees is at the heart of FEED’s reforestation philosophy. Unlike exotic or invasive species, native trees thrive harmoniously within their natural environment, providing food and shelter to indigenous wildlife, enriching the soil, and maintaining ecological balance. Their deep roots help prevent erosion, while their canopies regulate microclimates and protect the watershed—benefits that ripple through communities downstream.
Before the trek began, Sir Allan Libarnes opened the program with a short but powerful message about the Ridge to Reef Program, emphasizing the deep interconnection between upland forests and coastal ecosystems. The initiative aims to rehabilitate degraded forests using native Philippine trees, restore natural water flow, and reduce the risks of flooding and soil erosion. Beyond the mountains, the program extends to mangrove and coral restoration, protecting coastal communities from storm surges and preserving marine biodiversity.
By ensuring that upland and coastal ecosystems are managed together, the Ridge to Reef approach provides a holistic framework for resilience—one that benefits both nature and the people who depend on it. It also empowers local communities through alternative livelihoods, turning environmental stewards into sustainable facilitators of reforestation and conservation activities.
The Sierra Madre Mountains, often called the “backbone of Luzon,” stretch over 500 kilometers and serve as a natural shield against typhoons that strike the Philippines each year. This vast mountain range weakens storms before they reach populated lowlands, saving countless lives and livelihoods. Beyond storm protection, the Sierra Madre is a vital biodiversity hotspot, home to numerous endemic species found nowhere else in the world.
As climate change continues to intensify, the role of the Sierra Madre becomes even more crucial. Its forests sequester carbon, stabilize soil, and regulate the flow of water—functions that are indispensable to agriculture, local economies, and disaster resilience. Protecting and nurturing these forests is, therefore, an investment not just in biodiversity, but in the nation’s environmental and economic security.
The success of the event was made possible through the dedication of Herma Group’s eco-warriors and the unwavering support of the local community. Special thanks go to the local Forest Guardians, led by Forester Rey Lorida, and to Ms. Rose Bocado, who helped facilitate the day’s activities. FEED also extends gratitude to the community members—especially the ladies who prepared a hearty lunch that fueled everyone’s efforts.
As the sun set over the Sierra Madre, the newly planted trees stood as symbols of unity, resilience, and renewal. Through efforts like these, FEED, Inc. and its partners continue to demonstrate that collective action—rooted in care for both people and planet—can truly make a lasting impact.
FEED, Inc. looks forward to continuing its partnership with Herma Group and other organizations committed to nurturing the environment, ensuring that the forests of the Sierra Madre will thrive for generations to come.
