Rooted in Purpose: Full Scale Philippines’ Commitment to Reforestation and Climate Action

On the early morning of July 7, 2024, the Laguna Quezon Land Grant in the Sierra Madre mountain ranges welcomed 13 dedicated eco-warriors from Full Scale Philippines. The weather was unexpectedly calm—clear skies and a gentle breeze, a stark contrast to the typical micro weather patterns of the Sierra Madre, where frequent rains and strong winds dominate the terrain. This phenomenon is a characteristic of mountainous regions, where rapid shifts in temperature and pressure create localized weather conditions that can be unpredictable and challenging. Despite these usual conditions, the participants pressed on with unwavering determination, planting 200 native Philippine tree seedlings to support the region’s ecological balance.

The tree planting event included 20 Balitbitan, 30 Lawaan, 10 Kupang, and 140 Kuling Baboy—species that are endemic to the Philippines. Native trees play a crucial role in the country’s ecosystem as they have adapted to local soil and climate conditions, making them more resilient and sustainable in the long run. Unlike exotic species that can disrupt biodiversity, native trees promote soil stability, improve water retention, and support local wildlife. By focusing on endemic trees, reforestation efforts ensure that the land remains fertile, carbon sequestration is maximized, and the natural balance of flora and fauna is maintained.

Before embarking on their trek to the planting site, participants engaged in a morning exercise led by Ms. Rose Bocado of the Laguna Quezon Land Grant to prepare both body and mind for the day’s activities. FEED, Inc.’s Anne Marie Bakker then delivered an inspiring opening message, emphasizing the importance of the Ridge to Reef program. This initiative aims to restore forest landscapes and reforest areas using Philippine native trees, ultimately mitigating flood impacts and stabilizing slopes. Proper upland restoration enhances soil stability and water absorption, significantly reducing the risk of flooding in lowland and coastal areas. The program extends beyond tree planting by integrating mangrove and coral restoration, ensuring that entire ecosystems—from the ridges of the mountains to the reefs of the sea—are protected and thriving.

Moreover, the Ridge to Reef program contributes to community development by providing alternative livelihood opportunities for local residents. Over time, these initiatives empower individuals to become independent facilitators of environmental events, fostering a self-sustaining culture of conservation and stewardship.

Another key aspect of the event was the “Tree Nurturing Program,” which underscores the importance of the Sierra Madre Mountains as a natural barrier against strong typhoons. As climate change continues to intensify extreme weather events, preserving and restoring the Sierra Madre is vital. These mountains act as a first line of defense, absorbing the impact of typhoons and reducing wind speeds before they reach urban and agricultural areas. Forest restoration not only strengthens this protective shield but also contributes to carbon sequestration, mitigating the broader effects of climate change.

The success of this tree planting effort would not have been possible without the enthusiastic participation of Full Scale Philippines. Their commitment to the environment was evident in their energy and determination throughout the event. Special thanks go to the local community members who prepared a delicious and nourishing meal for the participants, as well as the Forest Guardians and facilitators, including Forester Rey Lorida and Ms. Rose Bocado, whose guidance ensured a smooth and effective execution of the program. FEED, Inc. extends its deepest gratitude to all involved and looks forward to fostering more meaningful partnerships in the future. Together, we can continue to plant the seeds of sustainability and protect the environment for generations to come.
