Laguna, Philippines — November 7, 2025. In the heart of the Sierra Madre Mountains, the Laguna Quezon Land Grant stirred with renewed life as volunteers from AXA Philippine Operations came together for a day dedicated to restoring the forest and strengthening nature’s resilience. Bathed in warm sunlight and cooled by the mountain breeze, the gathering was about commitment to environmental stewardship and collective action. Despite the Sierra Madre’s famously unpredictable microclimate—where calm skies can quickly give way to sudden rain—the day unfolded under clear weather, mirroring the optimism felt by everyone on site.
The day began with a short energizing exercise led by Ms. Rose Bocado of the Laguna Quezon Land Grant, preparing volunteers for the physical demands of planting. This was followed by opening messages that grounded the activity in purpose and urgency.
Forester Rey Lorida underscored the critical need for reforestation, reminding participants that “it is never too late to plant trees.” Anne Marie Bakker of FEED, Inc. then introduced the Ridge to Reef Program, an integrated approach to ecosystem restoration that connects upland reforestation with mangrove and coral planting. By stabilizing forest slopes, reducing flooding, and protecting coastal and marine ecosystems, the program highlights how mountains, rivers, and seas are deeply interconnected—and how protecting one ultimately protects all.
With hands in the soil and purpose in every step, the eco-warriors planted a total of 1,000 native Philippine tree seedlings: 200 Bani, 400 Lipote, and 400 Batino. These species were carefully chosen for their ecological value and long-term sustainability. Native trees are naturally adapted to the local soil and climate, allowing them to thrive with minimal intervention. More importantly, they provide food and shelter for native wildlife, support biodiversity, and help preserve the intricate ecological relationships that have evolved over centuries. By prioritizing native species, the reforestation effort ensured that the forest would regenerate in harmony with its original ecosystem.
Protecting and restoring biodiversity in the Sierra Madre is critical. As the longest mountain range in the Philippines and a vital watershed, it is home to countless endemic plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth. A diverse forest strengthens ecological stability—supporting pollination, seed dispersal, and nutrient cycling—while increasing resilience against climate change and natural disasters. Reforestation initiatives like this play a key role in safeguarding these natural systems, ensuring that future generations inherit a balanced and thriving environment.
Beyond biodiversity, tree planting also helps heal the long-standing wounds caused by illegal logging and deforestation. Decades of destructive activities have degraded vast areas of the Sierra Madre, weakening soil structure and disrupting natural water systems. Each newly planted tree contributes to rebuilding the land—preventing erosion, restoring watersheds, and absorbing carbon dioxide to help mitigate climate change. Together, the seedlings stood as living symbols of renewal, proof that damaged ecosystems can recover through sustained care and collective effort.
Often described as the “backbone of Luzon,” the Sierra Madre serves as a natural shield against typhoons, buffering communities from strong winds and heavy rainfall. It also regulates water flow, prevents landslides, and sustains agriculture across nearby provinces. As climate change intensifies extreme weather events, restoring and protecting this mountain range has never been more urgent.
The success of the activity was made possible through the strong collaboration between AXA Philippine Operations, FEED, Inc., and the local community. Special appreciation was extended to Forester Rey Lorida and the Forest Guardians, who guided participants through the terrain, and to Ms. Rose Bocado, who facilitated the event seamlessly. Adding warmth to the day, local women prepared a hearty meal for the volunteers—an expression of community spirit that perfectly complemented the shared environmental mission.
Through this meaningful collaboration, AXA Philippine Operations’ volunteers demonstrated that reforestation is more than just planting trees. It is about restoring balance, nurturing resilience, and planting hope—so that the forests of today may continue to protect and sustain generations to come.
