MPOWERing Conservation: One Meralco Foundation Plants 750 Native Trees in Sierra Madre

On the crisp morning of September 27, 2024, as the holiday season’s cool breeze swept across the country, 230 eco-warriors gathered at the Laguna Quezon Land Grant in the Sierra Madre mountain ranges. The event, organized through One Meralco Foundation’s MPOWER initiative, was more than just a tree-planting activity—it was a testament to the power of collective action in environmental conservation.

The unique micro weather of Sierra Madre set a challenging yet invigorating stage for the participants. Unlike the urban chill, the mountains brought intermittent rains and strong winds, making the trails slippery and the planting site difficult to navigate. Yet, despite these obstacles, the team successfully planted 1,575 native Philippine tree seedlings, reinforcing the region’s rich biodiversity and resilience against climate change.   The Vital Role of Native Philippine Trees

Native trees are essential to the country’s ecosystems, serving as natural habitat providers for local wildlife, including birds, insects, and mammals. Unlike exotic species, which can disrupt ecological balance, native trees enhance soil stability, improve water absorption, and thrive in the Philippine climate with minimal maintenance. By restoring forests with these indigenous species, efforts like MPOWER contribute to long-term environmental sustainability.

Before heading to the planting site, participants engaged in an energizing morning exercise. Forester Rey Lorida led program orientation. He introduced the Ridge to Reef approach, a comprehensive environmental initiative that restores upland forests to prevent erosion and mitigate flooding in lowland and coastal areas. This interconnected strategy extends beyond tree planting, integrating mangrove restoration and coral rehabilitation to strengthen marine ecosystems. Additionally, the program empowers local communities by providing alternative livelihoods, fostering long-term conservation leadership among residents.

The Sierra Madre: A Natural Shield Against Typhoons

As the “backbone of Luzon,” the Sierra Madre mountain range plays a crucial role in protecting the country from destructive typhoons. Restoring its forests through programs like MPOWER reinforces the nation’s defenses against climate change. However, challenges remain. Forester Rey Lorida reminded participants that illegal logging continues to threaten these vital ecosystems. He urged everyone to view conservation as a long-term commitment, emphasizing that today’s actions shape the legacy we leave behind.

The event was not just about planting trees—it was also an opportunity to reconnect with nature. Participants embarked on a trekking activity, fully immersing themselves in the beauty of the Sierra Madre. Studies show that spending time in natural environments reduces stress, enhances mental clarity, and boosts physical health by lowering blood pressure and strengthening the immune system. Beyond personal well-being, shared outdoor experiences foster teamwork and camaraderie, reinforcing the bond between individuals and their environment.

The success of the event highlighted the impact of collaboration. From One Meralco Foundation’s dedicated eco-warriors to the facilitators from FEED, Inc., and the local community, every contribution played a vital role. Special thanks go to the mothers of the community, who prepared a hearty meal for the participants, making the day even more memorable. The commitment of Forester Rey Lorida, the Forest Guardians, and Ms. Rose Bocado ensured the seamless facilitation of the activity.

Through this initiative, One Meralco Foundation and its partners have not only planted trees but have also sown seeds of hope and resilience for future generations. Looking ahead, this endeavor serves as a reminder that environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility—one that continues to thrive through sustained partnerships and unwavering commitment to protecting our natural heritage.
