“Puno ng Pag-ibig, Para sa Kalikasan”: Herma Shipping Plants 100 Native Philippine Trees in Sierra Madre

November 27 2024, under the clear skies but cold winds of the Sierra Madre, participants from Herma Shipping and Transport Corporation embarked on a mission to nurture Mother Nature. As part of their annual tree planting activity titled “Puno ng Pag-ibig, Para sa Kalikasan” (Tree of Love, For the Environment), the group planted 100 native Philippine trees, consisting of 45 Malaruhat, 10 Bani, 15 Yakal, 10 Lipote, 10 Apitong, and 10 Kalumpit.

Held at the Laguna Quezon Land Grant in Siniloan, Laguna, this event exemplified the participants’ dedication to environmental stewardship. Twenty eco-warriors participated, demonstrating unwavering determination to protect the environment and contribute to the ecological balance of the Sierra Madre Mountains. This was part of a request from Herma Group to comply with the Philippine Board of Investments (BOI)  (BOI Memorandum Circular #1), which requires BOI-registered firms to plant at least 100 trees within their premises or along the perimeter of their compounds. “If they don’t have space even for perimeter planting, these BOI-registered firms can plant the trees in a park of their choosing, as long as they would be responsible for their care and maintenance,” Leviste said, adding “We will be auditing these companies for compliance.”

Forester Rey Lorida set the tone for the day by emphasizing the mutual relationship between humans and nature. He highlighted how the recovery of Mother Nature depends on our actions, pointing out that by planting native trees, humans not only restore degraded ecosystems but also create opportunities for nature to give back. Healthy forests stabilize slopes, regulate water cycles, and provide habitat for wildlife, while also offering sustainable resources for local communities. This symbiotic relationship reminds us that environmental restoration is not a one-way effort but a partnership where the benefits are shared by all. Forester Rey also commended the local community for their ongoing efforts to combat illegal logging, a persistent threat in the Sierra Madre. Through vigilance and collaboration with environmental organizations, these communities actively protect the forests, ensuring that future generations inherit a thriving environment.

Native Philippine trees play a crucial role in the nation’s ecosystem, offering unique benefits that non-native species cannot. These endemic trees are adapted to local conditions, requiring less maintenance and thriving in their natural habitat. Their deep roots stabilize soil, prevent landslides, and improve water absorption, essential for maintaining healthy watersheds. They also provide shelter and food for native wildlife, ensuring biodiversity in forest ecosystems. Unlike exotic species, native trees foster resilience against pests and diseases, which helps maintain the forest’s ecological balance. Planting Philippine-native trees ensures the preservation of cultural and natural heritage, as these species are intrinsic to the country’s landscapes and history.

The Ridge to Reef program emphasizes forest landscape restoration using native trees to address flooding and enhance slope stability. This comprehensive approach links upland reforestation to coastal protection, recognizing the interconnectedness of ecosystems. By stabilizing upland areas and promoting mangrove and coral restoration, the program ensures the health of both terrestrial and aquatic systems. Such efforts create a holistic defense against environmental threats, benefitting both nature and nearby communities. Beyond environmental impact, the program offers alternative livelihoods for local residents, empowering them to become independent stewards of the environment. This integration of ecological restoration and community development highlights the program’s sustainable vision for the future.

The Sierra Madre Mountains, often called the country’s natural shield, are vital in mitigating the impacts of strong typhoons. Their vast forests and mountainous terrain act as a barrier, slowing down and reducing the intensity of storms. However, climate change exacerbates the challenges faced by the region, with stronger typhoons and erratic weather patterns threatening its ecosystems. The micro weather in mountainous areas, typically characterized by rains and strong winds, contrasts with the calm conditions experienced during the event. These shifts underline the urgency of preserving and restoring the Sierra Madre to combat climate change and protect the communities it shelters.

Collective action, as demonstrated by Herma Shipping’s initiative, is essential in addressing environmental challenges. When individuals and organizations unite for a shared cause, their impact magnifies, inspiring broader participation and ensuring sustainable outcomes. Tree planting events like this not only restore ecosystems but also build awareness and a sense of responsibility among participants. The collaboration between companies, local communities, and environmental groups underscores the importance of working together for the planet. By pooling resources, knowledge, and effort, collective action becomes a powerful force in creating a greener, more resilient future.

The day concluded with heartfelt gratitude to the eco-warriors of Herma Shipping and Transport Corporation, whose enthusiasm and dedication fueled the success of the event. Special thanks were also extended to the local community, especially the mothers who prepared a sumptuous lunch, and to Forest Guardians led by Forester Rey Lorida and Ms. Rose Bocado, whose expertise and assistance made the activity seamless. This partnership between Herma Shipping and nature marks a full, committed step forward, embodying the spirit of “Puno ng Pag-ibig, Para sa Kalikasan” and the shared vision of a thriving environment for future generations.
