20 Scanmar Maritime Services Inc. Plant 250 Trees in Sierra – Thank you rain!

15 November 2023, Siniloan, Laguna, Sierra Madre Mountain Range.   Scanmar Maritime Services Inc.  sent 20 representatives from their maritime staffing agency to plant 250 native Philippine forest trees at the over 9,000 hectare protected forest reserve managed by FEED’s first Living Legacy partner, the UP Los Banos (UPLB) in Siniloan, Laguna – the foothills of the longest in the Philippines, the Sierra Madre Mountain Range.

Following short talks by Forester Reynaldo Lorida, Field Supervisor II of UPLB, on the status of Philippine forests, and by Anne-Marie Mananquil Bakker, Director of Partnerships,  on community-based Ridge to REEForestation.

The participants also had to do a warm-up led by Diane Penales, FEED VP Operations, and Rose Bocado of the Laguna Quezon Land Grant, before carrying out a rather rainy and muddy but steady trek almost reaching the first top ridge of the site.

Planitng itself was completed in about 30 minutes time, since the holes had already been prepared in advance, and species selected appropriate to the chosen location.

After the quality control  to ensure that none of the biodegradable seedling bags were planted and that the root collars were not oversaturated with soil, but firm and ready to withstand the rains and winds at 1000 feet up, we proceeded down to base camp (some on the tumultuous fun tractor) where a native binalot chicken adobo meal was ravished by all!

Thank you Scanmar ecowarriors for being super enthusiastic and for being joined by your overseas and local leadership, your average 250 tonnes carbon offset will be well earned on the ships sailing across all seas!

May the Forest be with you always!

How Trees Secretly Talk to Each Other (BBC News)

Trees talk and share resources right under our feet, using a fungal network nicknamed the Wood Wide Web. Some plants use the system to support their offspring, while others hijack it to sabotage their rivals.
