Sustainability Innovation Lab Add 186 Trees to Sierra Madres

20 November 2023, Laguna Quezon Land Grant, Siniloan, Laguna. Organised by the sustainability unit of The Philippine Stock Exchange, Inc. (PSE), the Sustainability Innovation Lab* added 186 native Philippine upland flowering forest trees to the Sierra Madre mountain range, at the over 9,000 protected forest reserve of the UP Laguna Quezon Land Grant, in Siniloan Laguna – the foothills of the longest mountain range in the Philippines.

From the total of 186 seedlings plantted,  native species were:  100 Akdang, 36 Kalumpit and 50 Palong Maria.

Sponsored by the Sustainability Innovation Lab, the planting was carried out by our community-based forest guards with GPS coordinates 14.489600” and 121.514920” – for an estimated 1 Ton of carbon captured per tree in its lifetime (approximating 12 Tonnes), including additional partial support of a scholarship grant to a deserving Philippine student in the field of agriculture, education, environment, farming, forestry & sustainability studies, this November 20th, 2023.

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)  announced the launch of the Sustainability Innovation Lab (SIL), earlier that same November – in partnership with the IFRS Foundation. Through the SIL, representatives of GRI, the ISSB and other key stakeholders will collaborate to identify emerging sustainability disclosure topics, developing concepts, best practices and data-driven solutions.  The SIL, which is based in Singapore, aims to provide capacity building within supply chains that are being asked to meet new information demands. Multi-stakeholder working groups are being established to focus on four priority areas: digital taxonomies, audit and assurance, smaller companies, and public sector reporting.

Forest guardians from the community who assisted throughout the program, from site preparation to planting, monitoring and maintenance to date include:  Randy Velina Tamayo Rowel Doria Joel velina Gilbert Ryan Jun Jun Nieva.

Thank you Sustainability Innovation Lab for your support for the restoration of the Sierra Madres, may the forest be with you all always!

What can I do to stop climate change?

“As the world warms, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense, sea levels are rising, prolonged droughts are putting pressure on food crops, and many animal and plant species are being driven to extinction. It’s hard to imagine what we as individuals can do to resolve a problem of this scale and severity.

The good news: We are not alone. People, communities, cities, businesses, schools, faith groups and other organizations are taking action. We’re fighting like our lives depend on it — because they do.

In a world of more than seven billion people, each of us is a drop in the bucket. But with enough drops, we can fill any bucket.” –  David Suzuki

Check out some of the ways you can take more climate change action.

For example, Climate Action groups are the local solution to a global crisis. Right now people just like you are coming together to develop practical, local solutions and make their towns and cities more climate-friendly. Are you ready to join them? Find out what’s happening near you.
