MIT International School DARE – “Be the Change: Grow Green” – Reforesting the Sierra Madres

MI-INTL-SCH-13APR201947.jpg13 April 2019, Laguna Quezon Land Grant, Siniloan, Laguna. “Be the Change: Grow Green” – that is the tagline of MIT International School’s DARE Creative Social Outreach advocacy group, of which 18 students from different grades/years joined in the tree planting with FEED at the Sierra Madre mountains last 13th of April 2019.

Forester Rey is pictured above finishing the technical demonstration of how to de-bag and plant the seedlings properly to ensure its highest survival of at least 90% of all that we plant.

Forester Reynaldo E. Lorida, who helps manage part of the over 9,000 hectares of protected rainforest, expressed his appreciation to the  group, saying: “You could easily have been somewhere else during your weekend, at the malls or at the beach or just resting at home – but instead you are here with us and 20 other forest guards to protect and plant our last remaining forests. So thank you and hope to see more of you in the future!”

After site registration, the 18 MITIS eco-warriors received a short history about FEED & the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) – FEED’s longest and first Living Legacy partner by FEED Director of Partnerships, Anne-Marie Mananquil Bakker; and a Status of Philippine Forests updated by Forester Rey Lorida.

The group then proceeded to the planting site via a short trek through the “Forest Fitness” trail designed by the 25 plus permanent forest guards who patrol the over 9,000 hectares on a daily basis. Each participant planted 5 seedlings, and one mother decided to buy an additional 10 to add to her count, bringing the total to exactly 100 native Philippine forest trees planted.
